Identifying dialogue acts: linguistics or statistics?

چکیده

At some point in their processing, natural language dialogue systems typically perform some pragmatic analysis to compute the dialogue act (or speech act, dialogue move, illo-cution, etc.) underlying an utterance. The Verbmobil system, despite the fact that it is not engaged in the dialogue but only mediates it, is no exception. At present, both symbolic reasoning and statistical recognition are used for this purpose. This paper discusses the relative merits of both approaches and of various ways of integrating the two, which are currently subject to experimentation. 1 Dialogue acts in Verbmobil Natural language dialogue systems typically analyze utterances on various levels of abstraction , and often the \deepest" representation they construct involves dialogue acts (DAs). These are constructs that abstract from speciic lexical, syntactic, and semantic information, and represent only the pragmatic force that is relevant for the processing system. In the Verbmobil project Wahlster 1993], DAs are organized in a hierarchy reeecting their speci-city, and | to a certain extent | domain-dependency: the most speciic DAs are geared towards the task of appointment scheduling. Figure 1 shows the hierarchy of DAs used in phase I of the project Jekat et al. 1995]. At present, the list is being revised for phase II; nonetheless, we can base the following discussion on the hierarchy shown in the gure. Since Verbmobil employs several lines of analysis, varying on the scale from \deep" to \shal-low", diierent methods for recognizing the DA of an utterance are in use. Speciically, within the DIAKON component (dialogue processing and contextual evaluation) both statistical and rule-based recognition schemes are at work. The following two sections brieey describe these schemes. Then, section four examines the relative merits of the competing approaches and discusses possibilities for integrating them into a single framework. 2 Recognizing dialogue acts, linguistically In Verbmobil, the contextual evaluation (ConEval) module is given the syntactic/semantic representation of an utterance and asked to perform certain disambiguations and to compute 1

Studying the Lexicon of Dialogue Acts

Dialogue Acts have been well studied in linguistics and attracted computational linguistics research for a long time: they constitute the basis of everyday conversations and can be identified with the communicative goal of a given utterance (e.g. asking for information, stating facts, expressing opinions, agreeing or disagreeing). Even if not constituting any deep understanding of the dialogue,...

Error Analysis of Dialogue Act Classification

We are interested in the area of Dialogue Act (da) tagging. Identifying the dialogue acts of utterances is recognised as an important step towards understanding the content and nature of what speakers say. We have built a simple dialogue act classifier based on purely intrautterance features — principally word n-gram cue phrases. Although such a classifier performs surprisingly well, rivalling ...

Dialogue homme-machine multimodal : de la pragmatique linguistique à la conception de systèmes. (Multimodal human-machine dialogue: from pragmatic linguistics to system design)

Human-machine dialogue aims at providing natural dialogue in natural language, i.e., allowing the user to speak using his own language (natural language), following a structure of moves and exchanges that is similar to human dialogue structure (natural dialogue). Related research works feed on linguistics, which analyses language markers, and pragmatics, which analyses language use in context. ...

Towards Unsupervised Recognition of Dialogue Acts

When engaged in dialogues, people perform communicative actions to pursue specific communicative goals. Speech acts recognition attracted computational linguistics since long time and could impact considerably a huge variety of application domains. We study the task of automatic labeling dialogues with the proper dialogue acts, relying on empirical methods and simply exploiting lexical semantic...

A Recognition-Based Meta-Scheme For Dialogue Acts Annotation

The paper describes a new formal framework for comparison, design and standardization of annotation schemes for dialogue acts. The framework takes a recognition-based approach to dialogue tagging and defines four independent taxonomies of tags, one for each orthogonal dimension of linguistic and contextual analysis assumed to have a bearing on identification of illocutionary acts. The advantage...
